WH: No Change in Afghan Policy
White House press secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday that President Obama will not alter his Afghanistan plans because of the death of Osama bin Laden.
A number of anti-war Democrats have said that bin Laden's death represents an ideal occasion in which to declare the mission in Afghanistan accomplished and start bringing troops home.
But Carney said that Obama's strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, where bin Laden was found and killed on Sunday, "remains very much in place."
Carney said the president is committed to the war in Afghanistan and is still planning to begin troop withdrawals this summer. The plan calls for a full transfer of security responsibilities to the Afghan people by 2014.
