Turkey's Moves Against Israel

Written by David Frum on Tuesday June 1, 2010

The Turkish government has escalated the Gaza-bound flotilla raid into a global incident. What kind of a NATO ally is that?

Some Israel critics are suggesting that Israel's firing upon a Turkish vessel should be regarded as an Article V attack on NATO itself.

That is upside-down.

Let's view this matter right-side up: Turkish Hamas supporters provoked the confrontation - the flotilla departed from Turkish-occupied territory - and it is the Turkish government that has escalated the matter into a global incident. Turkey's misconduct follows just days after Turkey joined with Brazil to create diplomatic protection for the Iranian nuclear bomb program.

What kind of a NATO ally is that? And why are we still pressing the European allies to admit this increasingly erratic and even destructive state into the European Union?
