Pawlenty Blames Teachers Unions for Fenty Loss
Minnesota Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Wednesday lamented the loss of Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian Fenty, blaming teachers unions and expressing worry that the new administration will not continue the education reform policy.
Fenty lost the Democratic primary Tuesday night to D.C. Council President Vincent Gray, who is expected to easily win the general election in November.
But Pawlenty said Fenty and D.C. schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee deserve credit for taking on teachers’ unions, a longtime GOP target.
“Mayor Fenty lost after the teachers' unions led a campaign against him and Michelle Rhee. Fenty's loss is further evidence that despite all their rhetoric about 'the children,' what the teachers’ unions really care about is getting more money for jobs they can't lose at schools that produce students who are not prepared to compete,” Pawlenty said in a statement.
“While the primary's result is disappointing for school reformers, the positive early results from the Fenty-Rhee reforms will continue to undermine the teachers' unions' false arguments against reform everywhere,” he added.
