DeMint: O'Donnell Victory Worth Losing Seat
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) rejected criticisms Wednesday of the GOP nomination of conservative Christine O’Donnell in Delaware, suggesting he’d rather lose the race than see the moderate Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) became the next senator from the state.
“Mike is not going to vote with us in on things anyway, ” DeMint told reporters in the Capitol. “Mike supports the bailouts, the stimulus, financial reform. … Win or lose, we’re fighting for the right cause.”
Castle voted against the stimulus but voted for the Democrats’ 2010 Wall Street overhaul and the 2008 bank bailout, which was also supported by many members of the Republican Party. In the final days fo the primary campaign, DeMint threw his support behind O’Donnell, who rode a wave of tea party enthusiasm to beat the establishment-backed Castle. DeMint on Wednesday showed no regrets for his decision, even if it costs his party a seat.
“The stakes are so high as far as where we are with our country that to use these trivial political terms of moderate, conservative, liberal to define what is really a crossroads of a crisis,” he said. “We’re really trying to make decisions of survival, of bankruptcy as a nation.
“I’m not interested in political ideology or party right now. We need people up here to understand we’ve got to get back to limited government, and we can’t afford to have other Republicans who don’t get that message.”
