Misreading the Hispanic Vote

Written by David Frum on Tuesday November 2, 2010

Hispanic voters may vote negatively against candidates they perceive as hostile on immigration but don't vote affirmatively for pro-immigration candidates.

Very irritating watching CNN panel debate immigration amnesty as key to Hispanic vote. Not so!

This shouldn't be too complicated to understand:

Hispanic voters may vote negatively against candidates they perceive as hostile on immigration.

But they do not vote affirmatively for pro-immigration candidates. That was the big error embedded in the Bush-Rove approach to immigration. Hispanics (and especially Mexican-American voters) are bread and butter voters. Republicans who hope to win them will have to do better on bread-and-butter issues, and especially healthcare.
