Giffords To Attend Husband's Shuttle Launch

The New York Times reports:

PHOENIX — Representative Gabrielle Giffords is likely to take a break from her rehabilitation next month to see off her astronaut husband,  Mark Kelly, personally during the launching of his shuttle, aides said Thursday.

The Arizona congresswoman has not been seen in public since Jan. 8, when a gunman opened fire at an event she was holding for constituents outside a Tucson supermarket, killing six and wounding 13, including Ms. Giffords, who was shot in the brain.

Her recovery has been followed closely, especially in Tucson, where the tragedy hit hard. Two months later, a variety of tributes are being staged to honor Ms. Giffords and the other victims.

Jackson Browne’s folk music and liberalism have little in common with Alice Cooper’s hard rock and conservatism, which was the point of inviting them to share the stage at the Tucson Convention Center on Thursday night.

At a benefit concert for his newly created Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding, Ron Barber, one of the shooting victims and Ms. Giffords’s district director, sought to wipe away musical, not to mention political, dividing lines.

The fund will help with victims’ financial needs and support antibullying campaigns and programs for the mentally ill. Mr. Barber, a Democrat shot in the jaw and the groin, announced that Jim Click, a Tucson car dealer who has been one of the country’s top Republican donors, had given $50,000 to the effort.
