Alexi Giannoulias' campaign is now floating an internal poll that shows him tied with Congressman Mark Kirk in the Illinois Senate race. If these numbers are right, that would mean Giannoulias is actually gaining ground despite a hurricane of bad press.

Alexi Giannoulias' campaign is floating an internal poll that shows him tied with Congressman Mark Kirk despite Giannoulias' association with the now defunct Broadway Bank. The poll, conducted by Greenburg Quinlan Rosner Research for the Giannoulias campaign, polled six hundred likely voters from May 11-13 and pegged the race at 44-44. A poll conducted from April 27-29, (Broadway closed on April 23rd) showed Kirk leading Giannoulias 43-37.

If these numbers are right, this would mean that Giannoulias is actually gaining ground on Mark Kirk despite a hurricane of bad press and a significant monetary disadvantage (Kirk has outraised Giannoulias by a large margin). Overall, the poll still bodes well for Kirk since Kirk has more money and the Rod Blagojevich trial has yet to begin, but the longer Kirk lets Giannoulias hang around, the more opportunities Kirk will have to put his foot in his mouth.
