Ex-Agent On Bullet He Took For Reagan
Timothy McCarthy vividly remembers the suit he was wearing when he was shot protecting President Ronald Reagan 30 years ago.
McCarthy was working as a Secret Service agent when a man fired six rounds toward Reagan on March 30, 1981, outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. Reagan was hit by a ricocheted bullet and suffered a punctured lung but recovered quickly.
McCarthy leaped in front to shield the president and was shot in the stomach during the assassination attempt.
"I was wearing a new suit," he said.
Vivid memories, like the details of the attempted assassination, from McCarthy's 22-year-long Secret Service career were outlined during a presentation by McCarthy on Friday to the Calumet City Historical Society.
