Assange: Aussie PM Guilty of Treason
The Sydney Morning Herald reports:
The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has rejected a charge by the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, that the Australian government was exchanging intelligence with foreign powers about Australian citizens working for the organisation.
''I honestly don't know what he is talking about,'' Ms Gillard told the ABC's Q&A program last night.
Mr Assange had confronted Ms Gillard via a video question in which he asked which country Ms Gillard really represented, called on her to divulge what information her government was exchanging, and questioned whether she should be charged with treason.
Ms Gillard said to her knowledge the government was not exchanging any such information. And she blasted Mr Assange, saying while she respected whistleblowers and supported, for example, the Watergate leaks, she felt WikiLeaks's wanton publication of thousands of leaked diplomatic cables had no moral purpose.
''[It's] an anarchic, here-it-all-is, just have it,'' she said. ''I don't have a great respect for that.''
