Why Conservatives Should Love the Yankees
As the baseball season starts, we asked two FrumForum contributors to give us reasons why conservatives should support their team. Here, Jeb Golinkin makes the case for his New York Yankees.

I have the profound misfortune of loving the miserable Houston Astros. I was, however, born at New York Hospital, and because the Astros suck and my father is a die-hard Yankee fan, I also have a warm spot in my heart for the Bronx Bombers. Since I cannot wish the Astros upon any of you, I will take up a defense of my second ballclub, the New York Yankees. You know John Gardner is a Red Sox fan since only a Red Sox fan would spend so much time trying to come up with reasons to justify supporting his favorite team for political reasons. But since he made his case, I feel compelled to counter. Just as I would never wish the Astros on anyone, I cannot allow those conservatives looking for a baseball team to walk blindly into backing a franchise that used to be loveable but since they won a World Series, has just become a less excellent version of the New York Yankees.
Conservatives should support the Yankees because:
1.) Ronald Reagan must have been a Yankee fan, otherwise why would he have made one of the last acts of his presidency a pardon of "the Boss." George Steinbrenner may be headed for the next life, but earlier in this life, Steinbrenner pleaded guilty to making illegal contributions to the now infamous Nixon re-election campaign. He also pled guilty to obstruction of justice charges and was hit with a $15,000 fine for the offense. For this whole fiasco, Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball for 15 months.
2.) John gives us Curt Schilling? Great - except he ignores the piles and piles of cheddar being donated by the leaders of Red Sox Nation to blue candidates. Just to give you a few: Red Sox owner Tom Werner and team president Larry Lucchino are both major Democrats (both also gave to Coakley). The most famous celebrity Sox fan? Ben Affleck who donates to the Democrats. And if you want a complete picture of how those employed by the Boston Red Sox give, you can see a complete list here. I see a lot of blue money being donated by members of Red Sox Nation.
3.) The most famous Yankee fan? Rudolph Giuliani. And he's for real: 1996, 1999, 2001, 2009.
4.) Ari Fleischer loves the Yankees and the Republican Party. And he's not afraid to say so, even in the em>New York Times.<
5.) Alex Rodriguez donates to Republicans.
6.) Derek Jeter. It's unclear whether he is a Republican or a Democrat, but if enough of us support him, maybe he will become a Republican.
7.) I can't come up with any more reasons. The Yankees are better. New York is better. And the Yankees have Derek Jeter.
