Who Killed E-verify?

Liberals and conservatives, immigration restrictionists and immigration reformers, everybody likes e-verify, the simple and reliable technology for checking the work status of job applicants.

Only two weeks ago, e-verify received a resounding endorsement from Doris Meissner of the Migration Policy Institute. Meissner served as Bill Clinton’s INS commissioner and is certainly no immigration restrictionist.

The House version of the stimulus required use of e-verify for all employment created by government funds. But in conference with the Senate this week, the requirement disappeared. Who killed it?
