What "No Labels" Centrism Gets Right
John Podhoretz criticizes the No Labels movement for being based on an aesthetic not an ideology. But is this really so bad?
John Podhoretz has written a short critique of “No Labels” at Commentary.
While I don't agree with his description of No Labels, I think his critique is a thoughtful one and deserves some response.
Podhoretz criticizes No Labels as essentially being based on an aesthetic, rather than an ideology. Leaving aside whether one agrees with his reading of No Labels' aesthetic, in reading his comments, I thought to myself - isn't aesthetic another term for temperament, and what is wrong with a political worldview based on a certain temperament? Lots of conservatives over the years have stated that conservatism isn't an ideology, but a temperament that in many ways is the negation of ideology. Perhaps No Labels-style centrism is based on a similar temperament, and if it is, that is something worth rallying around.
