WH: Exile an Option for Qaddafi
White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday the White House continues to consider a range of options in dealing with Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, including a no-fly zone to protect Libyan citizens.
Carney confirmed administration chatter that the U.S. is "actively reaching out" to rebel groups in the country, but Carney would not say to whom. He said it would be "premature to make any decisions about recognizing one group or another."
With Gadhafi clinging to power through the use of violence, the U.S. and international community are scrambling to find a way to push him from power without dictating the internal politics of a country in a volatile region.
Carney said Monday morning Gadhafi stepping down and leaving the country would go a long way toward ending the upheaval.
"Exile is certainly one option for him to make that change," Carney said.
