Senior GOP sources tell FF that former Michigan GOP State Chair Ron Weiser will soon be named the RNC’s next Finance Chairman.

The field of candidates to pick the next RNC Finance Chairman is narrowing, and two senior Republican sources tell FrumForum that former Michigan GOP State Chair Ron Weiser will soon be named the Republican National Committee’s next Finance Chairman.

Weiser, who was elected Michigan’s state chair in February 2009, was initially tapped by RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to be on the transition finance team along with well-known Republican donors Sam Fox and Al Hoffman.

Now it appears that Weiser’s position may be more permanent – and that he may be taking the lead role in retiring the substantial debt which the Republican National Committee currently holds.

For its part, the RNC is saying that they have yet to make their choice. "We haven’t made any decisions regarding the Finance Chairman position and don’t expect to until we’ve made a full assessment of the department during the transition period," said RNC spokesperson Kirsten Kukowski.

Weiser was in attendance in a meeting of high-profile Republican donors and former finance chairs on Tuesday, attended by Republican heavyweights like Dwight Shar, Richard DeVos, Ted Welch, Mel Sembler, Fred Malek, Howard Leach, Peter Terpaluk, John Moran and Lew Eisenberg.

These major donors are also in the process of scheduling ‘national call days’, where big donors will go to Washington to call other major donors to fundraise on behalf of the RNC.

This A-list group – along with Fox, Hoffman and Weiser - shows that big donors are becoming animated again after former Chairman Steele has left the building. The RNC is currently in over $20 million in the red, but is said to be making steady progress in reducing its debt under the new chairmanship of Reince Priebus.

Ron Weiser has been a prominent fundraiser for Republican causes, and previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia. In 2009, Weiser ran unopposed to become the most recent Michigan GOP state chair.

The Chair of the Finance Committee does not need to be a member of the Republican National Committee, but serves at the will of the chairman.

If the sources are correct, Ambassador Weiser will presumably be appointed in the coming weeks and then confirmed at the next general meeting of Republican National Committee members.
