Weiner Messaged High School Girl
Responding to a news report that he sent private messages to a high school student in Delaware, embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner says his communications with the female were “neither explicit nor indecent.”
The statement from Weiner’s office came late Friday after Fox News reported that the Democrat who represents Brooklyn and Queens sent direct messages on Twitter to a 17-year-old high school junior.
A spokeswoman for Rep. Weiner said that “according to Congressman Weiner, his communications with this person were neither explicit nor indecent.”
The development came as Weiner said he had no intention of stepping down and promised that he would be back in Washington DC on Monday when Congress convenes.
Earlier Friday, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, who has called for an ethics probe into Weiner’s admission that he sent sexually explicit photos to women on Twitter, said she believed that his fate in Congress should be up to Weiner himself and his constituents.
Fellow New York Democrat Charles Rangel defended Weiner on Friday, saying he still believes Weiner can be an effective lawmaker, "if the press gets off his back."
Weiner, a seven-term Democrat, has admitted sending sexually explicit photos and messages over the Internet to a half-dozen women over the past three years.
