Politico reports:

Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia is firing at his own party’s platform – literally.

In a new ad released over the weekend, the governor who’s running for the Senate, shoulders a rifle and shoots a hole through a mock copy of the Democrats' comprehensive energy bill.

“I’ll take dead aim at the cap-and-trade bill, because it’s bad for West Virginia,” Manchin says in the ad.

Energy reform always has been a touchy issue for West Virginia Democrats. But the late Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd, whose seat Manchin is seeking to win, for example, began to warm to reform initiatives in his waning days in the Senate.

The ad, in which Manchin touts his pro-gun rights stance and endorsement from the National Rifle Association, comes in the wake of a controversy surrounding a commercial made for his Republican opponent, John Raese, featuring actors hired from a casting call seeking people with a “hicky” look.
