The unemployment rate remained at 9.6 percent in September as the U.S. economy lost 95, 000 jobs, the Labor Dept. reported Friday.
The final jobs report before Election Day was disappointing news for workers and Democrats, who have gotten most of the blame in the mid-term campaign for the struggling economy.
American businesses added 64,000 jobs, down from 93,000 in August, but this was overwhelmed by the 159,000 government workers who lost their jobs, about half of them temporary census workers.
Since hitting a recent peak of 10.1 percent last October, unemployment has been stuck above 9.4 percent, a high level at any time but the highest since 1930s one full year into an economic recovery.
