The Pride of the Yankees

It’s been a rough couple of days for us Yankee fans; first we lost the voice of God, Bob Sheppard, and then the great George Steinbrenner passed away this morning.

Steinbrenner rebuilt the Yankees from an average team to a dynasty. Most people say he has bought his success, but success can’t be bought; just ask the Mets and Cubs. Steinbrenner spent his money wisely, for example by drafting and signing Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettite, and Jorge Posada -- a group that went on to win five World Series. It’s hard to think though, that the Yankees would have won a single World Series if Steinbrenner had not had his distinctive attitude. Most teams who make the playoffs have had a successful season, not the Yankees. Anything but winning the World Series is a failure.  If the Yankees lost in the first round, Steinbrenner would promise changes. This attitude rubbed off on his players, and brought the city of New York two World Series in the 70’s, four championships in the 90’s, and the 2009 title.

Whether it was his grooming policy, his championship attitude, or his millions that went to helping many people, George Steinbrenner was one of a kind and will be missed by every Yankee fan.
