He won 212 games and recorded 155 saves in his 22 years in the major leagues. But could he win a congressional race, and does he even want to try? These are all questions Georgia Republicans began asking about eight-time all-star and future Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz the minute that news broke that Republican congressman John Linder was stepping down.

Smoltz responded to a text message inquiring about whether or not he was running, simply stating that “this is not in my plans.” Smoltz spent 21 of 22 full seasons with the Braves and is among the most popular players in the major leagues. He would almost certainly win, too. Beyond being one of the most popular figures in the state of Georgia, Smoltz is articulate and has been politically involved for a while. The 42 year old has campaigned with Congressman Tom Price and stumped for Senator Saxby Chambliss during his battle for reelection.

Smoltz is currently unsigned but says he would consider pitching again. Smoltz would be a fantastic replacement, if not an outright upgrade in terms of likeability. Smoltz would be the free agent pickup of the election cycle, and the Georgia GOP should do their best to sign him to join a different team, the Republican Party.
