Mubarak Leaves Cairo

CBS News reports:

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has temporarily left Cairo a day after transferring some power to Vice President Omar Suleiman in an effort to quell weeks of protests, sources tell CBS News.

The embattled ruler left the capital for Sharm el-Sheikh, in southern Egypt. He is not expected to stay there indefinitely but will return to Cairo. There were reports that he left the country for medical care, but they are inaccurate, sources told CBS News.

Mubarak was widely rumored to announce he was stepping down Thursday, only to enrage the masses of protesters seeking his ouster by declaring he would remain in office until the September elections. As a concession to opposition demands, he ceded some power to his vice president, though that did little to soften their anger.
