Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Shot in Arizona
Politico reports (as of 1:36pm ET):
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was shot Saturday outside a grocery store in Tucson, Ariz., while holding a public event.
NPR reported that she and six others were killed, but her office denied she had died.
“That report is incorrect.” Giffords spokesman C.J. Karamargin said.
Karamargin said he could not comment about whether other Giffords staffers were struck in the shooting, but that he was not hit.
Giffords, who was first elected in 2006, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a supermarket when a man started shooting, according to reports. She was hit in the head.
Twelve people were injured in the shooting shortly after 10 a.m. local time, according to Jason Ogan, a spokesman for the Pima Country Sherrif’s department. The police are sweeping the area for any other possible suspects and currently have one person in custody.
Also among those shot were her district director and local press secretary. Witnesses reported seeing bodies at the scene, CNN said.
Giffords was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson, according to NPR.
