Reid Unsure of DADT Vote Schedule
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told his caucus at a closed-door meeting Thursday that he would try to hold another vote on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy before the next Congress convenes.
After the meeting, Reid told reporters he wasn’t sure he could hold a vote before Christmas.
“It seems to be pretty high on the leadership’s list of things to get done, so we’ll probably end up getting a vote on that,” said Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) after the meeting.
“He says there will be,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said of a vote on repealing the ban prohibiting gays from serving in the military openly.
Even though there appear to be enough votes to overcome a filibuster and repeal a ban, it remains unclear whether Democrats will have success, as the year-end push is tied up with Democratic efforts to push through a massive omnibus spending bill, ratification of the New START treaty, a vote on the immigration measure known as the DREAM Act, and possibly a defense policy bill.
The GOP may also throw up additional procedural hurdles, forcing Democrats to overcome filibusters and wait-out time-consuming tactics like a full read of the nearly 2,000-page spending bill.
