Punishing John Edwards
The National Enquirer reports that John Edwards is looking to strike a deal to avoid jail time after an investigation into payments to his mistress, Rielle Hunter.
Robbed of a Pulitzer for its reporting on the John Edwards scandal, the National Enquirer seems determined to continue to be the leader in reporting on l'affaire Edwards. The paper (tabloid, gossip sheet...whatever) reports that the "$400 haircut" is looking to strike a deal to avoid jail time. Apparently, Edwards is willing to plead guilty to a misdemeanor, but he is also hoping to avoid being disbarred as a lawyer.
Edwards has been under investigation by the FBI and IRS for violations of campaign finance laws related to his paying mistress, Rielle Hunter. A grand jury has been in session since April 2009.
There is an argument to be made that the $400 haircut deserves to go to jail for being a jerk, but since that isn't a crime, it seems reasonable that Edwards should not have to spend time in prison. After all, Edwards has taken a public beating to end all public beatings. But while Edwards’ offenses (ranging from what might become admitted violations of the law to just being sleazy) may not be severe enough to warrant time in the slammer, he should probably be disbarred. These days, John Edwards is more fit for a reality television show than he is for a courtroom.
