Priebus Leads in RNC Endorsements

Wall Street Journal reports:

Members of the Republican National Committee will select their chairman in less than three weeks, and nearly two-thirds of the votes are still up for grabs.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Wisconsin GOP, has jumped out to an early lead, according to a helpful tally by the folks at Hotline OnCall. But even his 22 public commitments fall well short of the 85 votes needed to become chairman.

The current occupant, RNC Chairman Michael Steele, comes in second, with 12 public backers, according to the Hotline tally. That’s not good news for the controversial chairman as the “Anyone-But-Steele” campaign seems to be gaining steam. Further bad news: Shawn Steel, a committee member from California who defended the embattled chairman in the pages of The Wall Street Journal just weeks ago, has thrown his support behind Mr. Priebus, according to the Hotline list.

Mr. Steele is trailed by former Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis, with 11 public commitments, and Ann Wagner, a former chairman of the Missouri GOP and a former U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg, who claims 10 public backers.
