A new poll makes the case that even if California's Republicans nominate Carly Fiorina to run for Senate, that their best chance for victory in November remains Tom Campbell:

The poll by the Los Angeles Times and University of Southern California clearly shows that U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer is unpopular with voters, but in a theoretical matchup, only one of the three GOP primary candidates can beat her: former Silicon Valley congressman Tom Campbell.

But the poll also indicates that Campbell might not have the chance to face Boxer: Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has a huge lead in the three-way primary contest to decide which Republican will run against Boxer in the fall.

Armed with the latest polling data — released a little more than a week before Election Day — Campbell and Fiorina forces on Sunday quickly set in place new battle plans. Campbell strategists trumpeted the survey, saying their guy was the only Republican who could take out Boxer. Fiorina strategists boasted that the poll was proof that Republicans are choosing her over Campbell as the true fiscal conservative in the race.
