Obama's Reelection Edge

Obama's ratings aren't stellar (at about 47%), but they're in the same ballpark as Clinton, Reagan, and Nixon's were at the same point. And they were reelected in landslides.

Here's one major political factoid on President Obama's side: all three post-World War II incumbents who lost their bids for a second term as well as Lyndon Johnson (who decided not to run for a second full term after a humiliating showing in the New Hampshire primary) and Harry Truman (who decided not to run for a third term after polls showed Sen. Estes Kefauver would be competitive) faced decently financed opponents for the nomination. It seems hugely unlikely that President Obama will face such an opponent.

Although his approval ratings are hardly stellar--at about 47 percent--they're in the same ballpark as Clinton's, Reagan's, and Nixon's were at the same point. And all three won in landslides.

If nothing else, Republicans face an uphill battle if they want to reclaim the White House.
