Obama and GOP to Meet Again on Monday
The Hill reports:
President Obama and GOP leaders in Congress failed to reach a breakthrough on debt talks Sunday night during a 75-minute White House meeting.
Obama and leaders from both parties agreed to meet again Monday at the White House at a time to be determined.
The White House announced Obama would hold an 11 a.m. press conference Monday on the debt talks as Democrats appeared ready for a a public push to pressure Republicans to accept a grand bargain in the hopes that the GOP will be blamed if a large accord is not struck.
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Saturday called Obama at Camp David to say a grand debt deal to reduce deficits by $4 trillion would not be achievable because it could lead to higher taxes.
A Democratic official after Sunday's meeting said the president is not done pushing for the biggest deal, and that congressional leaders "need to see what deal can pass both bodies."
"If they want to walk away from a historic opportunity to reduce the deficit, that's their choice, but it does expose them in a pretty big way," the official said.
