The New York Times reports:

In a television interview to be broadcast to Iran by the BBC’s Persian-language satellite channel, President Barack Obama said remarks made by Iran’s president, suggesting that the American government was responsible for the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, were “inexcusable.”

Mr. Obama told the channel, which is watched by millions of Iranians:

"It was offensive. It was hateful. And particularly for him to make the statement here in Manhattan, just a little north of ground zero, where families lost their loved ones — people of all faiths, all ethnicities, who see this as the seminal tragedy of this generation — for him to make a statement like that was inexcusable."
