NYC Schools Chief Leaving
The Wall Street Journal reports:
New York's embattled schools chief, Cathleen Black, is out, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday.
She is leaving after serving just three months in the position, a tenure that was marked by a series of gaffes, high-level departures of her deputies and a low public approval rating.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg tapped Dennis Walcott, his deputy mayor for education, to take over as schools chancellor at a City Hall press conference on Thursday morning.
Mr. Bloomberg said he and Ms. Black met Thursday morning and agreed mutually that "it is in the city's best interest" if she resigns, the mayor said at the press conference. Mr. Bloomberg said he accepted full responsibility for Ms. Black's appointment not being successful.
