Nobel Winners: Drop Boycott of Israeli Profs

Written by Arsen Ostrovsky on Thursday November 4, 2010

This week, 38 Nobel Laureates spoke out against the campaign to boycott Israeli academics and educational institutions.

In response to the recent spate of attempted boycott, divestment and sanction (BDS) campaigns against Israel, 38 Nobel Laureates have signed a statement, providing a passionate case against the use of such campaigns, which continue to single out and target the Jewish State.

The statement, which was written under the auspices of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME), a non-profit group of 60,000 faculty and scholars from around the world, was done mainly in response to the BDS campaigns targeting Israeli academics, institutions, and research and training centers.

A central theme of the Nobel Laureates’ statement is that the BDS campaign is:

- antithetical to principles of academic and scientific freedom;

- antithetical to principles of freedom of expression and inquiry, and

- may well constitute discrimination by virtue of national origin.

The full statement can be read here.
