Budget Delays Hit National Security
Congress did not pass a budget for Fiscal Year 2011 - the first time it has not done so since 1974 - and their failure is having real and costly effects on our national security.
The United States Congress did not pass a budget for Fiscal Year 2011, the first time it has failed to do so since 1974. Although the government continues to run on continuing resolutions - the most recent one authorizes funds until March 11, 2011 - the failure to pass a budget is having real and costly effects.
One such effect is illustrated by an email passed along from a college senior. The senior, who had passed the first round of interviews for a job at the FBI, was informed that the agency's hiring would be frozen because they were operating under a continuing resolution.
This is an entire cohort of educated, talented individuals whose careers in law enforcement are now stalled. Both students and the agency will suffer for it.
Here's the full letter below:
Dear Candidate,
At this time, federal agencies are operating under a continuing resolution with limited funding. As a result, the Department of Justice has ordered a temporary freeze on agency hiring.
Regrettably as a result of this directive, the FBI will not be conducting any further interviews or extending job offers to the University Hire candidates. To date you have passed the first round interview process and based on your skill sets you are considered a highly qualified candidate. In the event that the directive changes and career opportunities become available, your resume will be reviewed and forwarded to hiring managers for further consideration.
Please visit the website for updates to our hiring opportunities.
Thank you for your continued interest in FBI employment.
Sincerely,
FBI, University Hire Team
