Michelle Rhee Heads to Sacramento
The Sacramento Business Journal reports:
In his annual State of the City address, Mayor Kevin Johnson said that while economic forecasts for the next two years are grim, Sacramento can make progress by taking on projects “we can do for ourselves and pay for ourselves.”
For his part, Johnson broke the news that the national organization StudentsFirst, formed and headed by former District of Columbia public schools chancellor Michelle Rhee, who is Johnson’s fiancée, will be headquartered in Sacramento. StudentsFirst will have an annual operating budget of $200 million.
Rhee formally announced the launch of the new national organization on the Oprah Winfrey Show last month. The organization is dedicated to reforming the nation’s public schools. As part of the rollout for StudentsFirst, Rhee landed on the cover of Newsweek magazine.
Rhee has said her goal for the first year will be to raise $1 billion and recruit 1 million members.
