Meek Wants BP to Pay $100 Million

Florida Senate candidate Kendrick Meek wants BP to increase its commitments to pay for advertising in states affected by the recent oil spill:

BP pledged $25 million to the state for advertising its tourism industry recently, but Meek wants $100 million.

“Even though we don’t have oil there [on the Florida beaches] it’s important to fight the perception,” Meek told reporters yesterday. “People need to know that there are hotels open for business. 25 million dollars will not help us.”

BP is running advertisements in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama, following complaints from lawmakers that coverage of the oil spill is creating a false perception of oil on the beaches that’s keeping tourists away.
