Loughner Hearings Move to Tucson
Federal proceedings in the criminal case against alleged gunman Jared Lee Loughner will take place in Tucson, where the mass shooting that injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords happened, and not in Phoenix, where the first two hearings in the case were held.
U.S. District Judge Larry Burns on Monday approved an agreement between prosecutors and defense lawyers to shift future federal proceedings to Tucson.
The decision, Burns said, “does not affect the defendant’s right to move for a change of venue in the future.”Loughner’s lead attorney, public defender Judy Clarke, has in past filings indicated that she would like to see the proceedings held outside Arizona, contending that would give her client a better chance at a fair trial.
