Liberal Groups Complain: Sotomayor "not A Major Thinker"

Written by David Frum on Thursday May 28, 2009

So reported Politico yesterday:

The concern from some liberal groups, however, is that despite her 16 years as a circuit and federal court judge, Sotomayor has not shown her hand on abortion, the death penalty, national security and gay marriage. And she’s not viewed as a major thinker in areas like constitutional rights, executive privilege, civil rights or human rights. ...

[In an interview on Air America, Marjorie Cohn president of the left-wing National Lawyers Guild said:] I am very supportive of her nomination, and she should be defended, and she should be confirmed, but she is not going to be another Thurgood Marshall ... She will not leave an indelible mark on the court, ultimately, the way Earl Warren did or Oliver Wendell Holmes.”

And in its backstory of the making of the decision, the New York Times this morning had this to say:

She checked “each of the grids,” as Mr. Obama’s team later put it.

Are we seeing a profile emerging here?
