WLWT reports:

CINCINNATI -- A new poll released on Friday shows the Republican challengers for two of Ohio's highest offices have extended their lead.

The Ohio Poll, conducted by the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Cincinnati, showed John Kasich has an 8-point lead over incumbent Ted Strickland in the race for Ohio's governor. Kasich led 51 percent to Strickland's 43 percent according to the poll, with 6 percent undecided or planning to vote for another candidate.

The poll also showed Republican Rob Portman with a comfortable lead over Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher in the race for U.S. Senate, 58 to 36 percent. Six percent of respondents said they were undecided or planned to vote for another candidate.

The Ohio poll showed a big change in attitudes from 2008. Republicans now hold the advantage in both excitement and turn-out intent, according to the poll, which is a turnaround from 2008 when Democrats held the advantage.

The Ohio Poll was conducted between Oct. 8 and Oct. 13, with 705 likely voters interviewed by phone.

The polls have a margin of error of 3.7 percent.
