Gibbs Says Goodbye

The Hill reports:

It took almost seven years, but President Obama finally returned the tie he borrowed from his press secretary Robert Gibbs.

Obama brought back the tie during an appearance in the White House briefing room to say a public good-bye to his long-time aide and friend, who marked his last day as White House press secretary on Friday.

“Robert started very early with me on this wild ride that I've been on,” Obama said.

Gibbs’s last day came the same day Hosni Mubarak departed as president of Egypt.

“Obviously, Gibbs's departure is not the biggest one today,” Obama joked.

Gibbs kidded that he will “miss boring days like this at the White House.”

The tie comes with a story. Obama borrowed a light-blue tie from Gibbs before the then Senate candidate addressed the 2004 Democratic convention and exploded onto the national scene.

Obama joked that Gibbs has since then possessed a "simmering resentment" because he never got the tie back.

But on Friday, Obama presented his close adviser with the tie, framed with pictures of the two of them together and a handwritten note that said, among other things, that the tie “and you helped me get started.”
