Gaddafi's Nobel Rival

Next week, Turkish PM Erdogan will receive Libya's Prize for Human Rights, an award dedicated to that bastion of human rights himself: Muammar Gaddafi.

AFP reports that Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan will travel to Libya next week to receive the ‘prestigious’ Gaddafi International Prize for Human Rights, dedicated to none other than that bastion of human rights himself, the great Brother Leader of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi.

In its 2010 Freedom in the World annual survey, Freedom House awarded Libya the lowest possible rating for both political and civil liberties (others in this category included Sudan and North Korea).

Turkish PM Erdogan, despite his (own) protestations (and apparently now those of Brother Leader’s), is of course no great human rights warrior himself, given his brutal treatment of the Kurds and suppression of human rights defenders, journalists and free speech - not to mention his support of Ahmadinejad and terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbullah.

I wonder what’s next – Iran presenting Saudi Arabia the Ahmadinejad International Prize for the Advancement of the Status of Women & Minorities?
