Eleven Dems Vote Shuler for Leader
Nineteen House Democrats cast protest votes against Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in her bid to become minority leader.
Eleven Democrats voted for Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) to lead the party during the next Congress, while a smattering of other lawmakers received votes.
The defections suggest the discomfort some Democrats, many of them centrist, had with keeping Pelosi on as their leader. It's worth noting, however, that about 90 percent of other Democrats supported the outgoing Speaker as their minority leader.
Other Democrats receiving vote are Rep. John Lewis (Ga.), the new whip, Rep. Steny Hoyer (Md.), Rep. Dennis Cardoza (Calif.), Jim Costa (Calif.), Jim Cooper (Tenn.) and Marcy Kaptur (Ohio).
Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) voted "present," and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), who had favored replacing Pelosi, did not vote. Costa and Cardoza voted for each other.
