Durbin: Congress Will Investigate NewsCorp
Democratic Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois said Sunday he would like to see Congress investigate News Corporation in the wake of the company’s phone-hacking scandal in Britain.
“Yes, I would,” Durbin replied when asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” whether he would like to see an investigation of the company. “I can tell you that there are questions about whether the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act has been violated by Rupert span style="color: green;">Murdoch< and his news empire, and what’s going on in England is startling to think of the extent that they went to break the law to try to report a story. We need to follow through with the FBI investigation and also with congressional investigations.” (Durbin flubs Muslim-discrimination hearings)
But South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint said Congress has too many other things to worry about with the debt crisis to divert attention to such an investigation.
“David, we need to let law enforcement work here,” DeMint said. “Congress has got a big issue in front of us. We need to handle our own business for a change and the focus this week is on the only plan we’ve got, and that’s ‘Cut, Cap and Balance.’”
