Don't Quit on Egypt
The Egyptian people are more than capable of handling democracy; and should absolutely be in control of their own destiny.
On Sunday, I taped my second appearance on Crosstalk (my first appearance was last week). Crosstalk is a Russian English language television show. And amid all of the crosstalk, I misspoke at one point. I said Egypt shouldn’t be “left to its own devices.”
What I meant to say, and what I hope is clear from the full context of my remarks, is that we shouldn’t “leave Egypt alone” to fend for itself, to become prey to the illicit and illiberal designs of the Islamists and the Jihadists.
The past three weeks, after all, strongly suggest that the Egyptian people are more than capable of handling democracy; and they absolutely should be in control of their own destiny. Indeed, what Egyptians have achieved in the past three weeks -- the overthrow of a 30-year dictatorship -- is nothing short of miraculous.
And so, as I often said while serving as a Marine in Iraq: Assalamu alaikum (Peace be unto you).
