Dems Plan Fundraiser for Giffords
As Rep. Gabrielle Giffords recovers from last month’s shooting, her closest friends in Congress are moving to raise money for her reelection committee to make sure she has the necessary resources to run a campaign in 2012.
“As we all know, Gabby suffered serious injuries in the January 8th shooting in Tucson, AZ. We are so proud of her as she continues to make incredible strides in her recovery,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Reps. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) write in the cover letter of an invitation obtained byPolitico . “We look forward to seeing her again soon and to the day that she will rejoin us in the halls of Congress and resume her role as a leading advocate for solar energy, increased border security, job creation through innovation, and protecting the needs of military families and veterans. But first Gabby must focus on the important work of her recovery. With that in mind, we have joined together to support Gabby, and we hope that we can count on you to join us!”
Last week, Politico reported that Giffords has begun speaking, and those who have spent time with her say they have reason to be optimistic about her recovery. Some have cautiously mentioned her as a potential Senate candidate in the wake of Republican Jon Kyl’s announcement last week that he won’t seek reelection, but the March 15 Washington fundraiser is for the existing Giffords for Congress committee. While her political future depends on the speed and degree of her recovery, Giffords’s confidants want to ensure that she’s not hamstrung by a lack of fundraising while she’s in rehabilitation.
