December Report Shows Jump in Jobs

The Hill reports:

The nation's job market showed surprising signs of life in December as private employers added 297,000 jobs, more than three times the number expected by economists, reflecting accelerating growth.

Large and small companies were hiring last month, and the construction industry finally stopped shedding jobs after more than three years of consistent losses, as the economy added far more than the 100,000 jobs expected last month, according to a report released Wednesday by payroll processor ADP.

The report suggests that "private employment grew very strongly in December, at a pace well above what is usually associated with a declining unemployment rate."

The Labor Department's monthly jobs report is due out Friday and could show job growth around 150,000. The ADP report is used to help analysts revise their predictions.
