Collins Starts to Raise Funds for Possible RNC Run
ABC News' Jonathan Karl reports:
Another Republican insider is gunning for RNC Chairman Michael Steele’s job.
ABC News has learned that former RNC Political Director Gentry Collins has taken the first step toward running for RNC Chairman, filing papers with the IRS to create a 527 fund-raising committee called “Collins for Chairman.”
Collins caused quite a stir last week when he abruptly resigned from the RNC, accusing current RNC Chairman Michael Steele of mismanaging the RNC and “allowing its major donor base to whither.”
The papers were filed on Collins’ behalf by Brian Kennedy, the former Chairman of the Iowa Republican Party.
“He’s a proven party leader who has gotten results,” Kennedy told ABC News. “He will be able to instill confidence in donors to parties that we will have a strong organization to support the republican party nominee in 2012.”
Kennedy said Collins will make a decision soon about whether to run.
“It’s no secret that he is exploring a run for RNC Chairman,” said Brian Kennedy. “This is a mechanism to allow him to continue that exploration.”
