Coleman Rules Out 2012 Senate Run
Former Sen. Norm Coleman said Tuesday that he won’t be running for Senate again in 2012 but did not rule out a return to office at some point in the future.
The Minnesota Republican lost a tight reelection bid to Al Franken in 2008, which was followed by a recount battle that lasted nearly eight months. Now he said he won’t be challenging Minnesota’s other Democratic senator in 2012. “I am not going to run against Amy Klobuchar,” Coleman said on ABC News’s “Top Line” webcast.
Since losing his Senate seat, Coleman has flirted with other public jobs. After the Republican former Gov. Tim Pawlenty said he wasn’t running for reelection in 2010, Coleman hinted that he might be interested in the job.
Ultimately, though, he said the race was “both a bit too soon and a bit too late.” That and other comments generated speculation that he might be considering a challenge to Klobuchar. But that’s not the case, he said, forthrightly declaring that he was going to “make news” on the midday webcast.
“I’m not going to run against Amy Klobuchar, I’ll leave that task to others,” he reiterated. “My heart’s in public service at some point but not in 2012.”
