Coburn to GOP: Get Deal Done

Politico reports:

Usually, he's the Senate's Dr. No. But today, Sen. Tom Coburn is urging his fellow Republicans just to say yes to a budget deal.

Coburn, one of the Senate's most well-know deficit hawks and an anti-abortion obstetrician, says it's time for Republicans to set aside social issues and keep their eye on spending cuts, while averting a government shutdown.

Coburn made his case in an interview Friday with Bloomberg's Al Hunt:

“It’s pretty unrealistic to think with this president that you’re going to get a lot of riders. That’s number one. Number two is, what’s the greatest moral dilemma of our day? Abortion certainly is a big one, but if we don’t address all these other financial issues that are going to cripple those that are with us, we’ll be making a mistake.” ...

“It is important for their base to send the signal that we’re doing as hard as we can. It’s pretty hard to get spending cuts when you don’t control the White House and you don’t control the Senate.”
