Charlotte to Host Dem Convention
The 2012 Democratic National Convention will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, the DNC announced today.
During the week of September 3rd the party’s convention will take place at the Time Warner Cable Arena, better known as the Bobcat arena.
In an email to “Organizing for America” supporters First Lady Michelle Obama announces the pick, nothing that Charlotte is a city marked by “southern charm, warm hospitality, and an ‘up by the bootstraps’” mentality.
“Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds,” Mrs. Obama writes in an email, “And of course, great barbecue.”
During the 2008 presidential election, then-Senator Obama fought hard as the party’s nominee to flip the state from red to blue. Mr. Obama won the state narrowly in the general election 50% to McCain’s 49%.
In 2012 the president will likely make an equally heavy push targeting the state in the general election. The choice of Charlotte to hold the party’s convention is just another sign the party hopes to keep the state squarely blue in 2012.
“This should put to rest any notion that we believe the map is shrinking ,” a Democratic official says, “we are going to play big – the president is in very strong shape in NC right now and we are going hard after VA, NC and all the states we won in 2008.”
