Chamber of Commerce Responds to Funding Allegations
Politico reports:
U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue on Monday responded to the recent attacks on his group by the Obama administration, saying flatly that the attempts to tie the Chamber to foreign interests “won’t work.”
“We are seeing an attempt to demonize specific groups and distract Americans from a failed economic agenda, ” Donohue said in POLITICO’s Arena.
President Barack Obama and his allies have repeatedly accused the U.S. Chamber of Commerce of funding political activities with foreign cash – an allegation that the group denies. Vice President Joe Biden continued that line of attack on Monday afternoon during a campaign stop in Scranton, Pa., calling on the Chamber to disclose its donors.
“I challenge the Chamber of Commerce to tell us how much of the money they’re investing is from foreign sources,” Biden said, according to the pool report. “I challenge them; if I’m wrong, I will stand corrected. But show me, show me.”
The Chamber has said it plans to spend $75 million this midterm season.
Donohue told the Arena it’s time to turn the discussion back to the economy and job creation. Last week, the government reported that the unemployment rate was static at 9.6 percent and the country lost 95,000 jobs in September.
