Castle Won't Endorse in Delaware Race
Politico reports:
Delaware Republican Mike Castle, who was upset by Christine O'Donnell in the GOP Senate primary, won't be endorsing anyone in the race.
Castle, a popular politician in his state, told CNN that because his primary fight was so "nasty" he does not want to get involved further in the race to win Vice President Joe Biden's old seat.
"I'm not going to endorse anybody in that particular race, not because of the competence of any of the candidates, but because the primary I went through was very nasty in a variety of ways, both politically and personally, and I've just declined to get involved in that," Castle told CNN in a pre-recorded interview airing later tonight with anchor John King.
The Delaware congressman noted that the tea party is a strong political force that needs to be taken seriously in races across the country. Before losing his primary battle, Castle was considered a near-lock to defeat Democrat Chris Coons.
"I will give credit to the Tea Party Express people who backed Christine O'Donnell. They're good politicians," Castle said. "Anyone who says they're not politicians doesn't know what they're talking about, as far as I'm concerned. They did an effective job of winning the race for her, and, you know, they're probably going to be very effective in setting up the last few weeks of the general election as well, if I had to guess."
Polls show O'Donnell trailing Coons by double digits in Delaware and will have to make up serious ground to pull off another upset. Coons also spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon on the eve of a debate between the two candidates.
