Carter Returns US Citizen From North Korea
Jimmy Carter will be returning from North Korea with a freed US citizen:
BEIJING — Former US president Jimmy Carter's office has confirmed he has left Pyongyang with a detained American citizen, after securing an amnesty deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il.
The Nobel peace laureate left the North Korean capital on Friday with Aijalon Mahli Gomes, an African-American who was jailed in April for illegally crossing into the North from China, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
North Korea also expressed its willingness to resume six-party nuclear disarmament talks through Carter, state media said.
The North's number two leader Kim Yong-Nam expressed the will for "the resumption of the six-party talks" and the denuclearisation of the peninsula, the official Korean Central News Agency said after the visit by Carter.
